Canada Calling, Part 4

If you come over in March, of course there is no guarantee that you will find a house that you really want to buy. You may decide that you don't want to live in the VT region and so you might want to look at properties on the Black Sea coast or maybe near the border with Greece.

My advice would be to stay flexible, with regards to location. Yes, you will need to be fairly close to a large town / city. At Daveri, we are about 50 or maybe 60 kms from VT and so it takes us the best part of an hour to get from our country house into the centre of VT. I would not want to be much further than that. Some country roads in Bulgaria have been upgraded and they make driving a pleasure, but some country roads are BAD.

Yes, indeed. One of the reasons we really like the areas around and between Tryavna / Gabrovo, Dryanovo and Sevlievo... Then we can choose many options for towns to go for amenities while still being in nature.

The Yantra? Or Danube?

This is the Yakhovitsi reservoir, the other side of Elena. It is HUGE!

Oh, a reservoir! Cool. Yeah, I've seen that on the map

Tryavna is a pretty town, rather touristy and you might find property rather expensive there! I suggest that some smaller towns like Tryavna might not have the facilities that you want (a hospital, bank, supermarkets etc).

Veliko Tarnovo is not a huge city, but it does have just about everything. Elena is quite a pretty town, but for serious shopping my wife says that we have to go to VT!

We aren't looking in Tryavna... We are looking a villages around the area. We don't want to be in a town as big as Tryavna. There are lots of places available in the area between Tryavna, Gabrovo and Dryanovo. Nice and handy to Gabrovo for almost everything and VT is still close enough.

It is not far from VT. The really good thing is that they will also deliver furniture for you.

I'm sure VT has some good stuff too? In regards to second hand furniture?

Not sure. We always go to Dryanovo. They have EVERYTHING.

If you find a gem, you stick with it!

Are the prices good?

We had this furniture made for us and it was very expensive (and nice). The Dryanovo place always sells nice stuff at very reasonable prices. And there is lots of choice. I do not really know anything about Gabrovo. I suppose it is a fairly large city, but not quite as big as VT.

Another thing that you might want to bear in mind is that at last (at long last) there is a real possibility that the airport in Gorna Oryahovitsa might be opening for passenger flights, probably in 2027. This is something that has been talked about for years (and years) and now it looks as though it might at last be happening. Ryanair are supposed to be starting flights to the UK and Germany. That's about all I know.
