Oh ****!

Back in 1980, Isaac Asimov wrote A Cult of Ignorance . Trump's re-election seems to underline the truth of Asimov's thesis. He wrote: "There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge." Dear Peter, Well, I was rather hoping for a reply from you that would perhaps be a little longer, more detailed and informative. However, I completely agree with your sentiments. I don't understand how it is possible for the majority of the population in America to have re-elected that scumbag, that liar and fraudster. On the other hand, someone once said to me, "Never underestimate the stupidity of Americans." I mean, Trump becoming President again just about proves it, 100%, and so you do not need any more of those YouTube v...

Dear John

Dear John,             Tuesday, 8th October, 2024  It is always splendid to receive an email from you, old fellow. When I was teaching at the British School of Bucharest, I used to get twenty or thirty emails every morning. It used to drive me mad! “Oh Lord, deliver us from email…” As I think I may have mentioned to you, Peter and I have made a bet that Trump will go to jail as a result of the hush money case. Now I am not sure that I really understand how the American criminal justice system works. My guess is that if the Police think that someone has done something a bit naughty, then that person is charged and put on trial. After the trial is over and the defendant has been found guilty, then of course he or she can appeal to a higher court. However, in order for the higher court to take up the appeal, then there has to be some grounds for appeal court to consider, such as new evidence that was not available at the time of the trial or mis...

Back to the Future

Is it really possible that Donald Trump could be re-elected as the President of the United States in 2024? In some ways, it is difficult to imagine this happening, as Trump is currently facing no less than ninety-one different criminal charges, some of which might result in a long prison sentences, if he were to be found guilty. On the other hand, I have seen quite a few YouTube videos in which someone asks members of the American public some fairly simple questions. The incorrect answers that are given show levels of utter stupidity and moronic thickness that are almost unimaginable. I have often wondered whether these videos are actually faked and that the people who are giving these brainless answers have been bribed or tricked into saying such silly things. But what would be the point of that? If these YouTube videos are genuine, then they suggest that there is a most unpleasant reality, namely that a significant number of Americans are in fact staggeringly stupid, uneducated and m...
